Commencing Thursday 20 May with the Gala Opening at the Sugar Wharf there are 40 events with something to suit everyone; some free and some ticketed. This year there has been an emphasis on cuisine and there are a number of new events in this category including the Food Fight and Palates of Port which are Chamber events with any profits returning to Carnivale.

The Carnivale Club is a new innovation aimed at providing a variety of events at the one location – the Sugar Wharf. It is an important addition to Carnivale and proceeds from these events will support other events such as the Street Parade and Beach day. Dont miss ‘The Gala’ opening on 20 May the first glam event at the Sugar Wharf!

A pod of Endangered Species Sei Whales sighted at Agincourt Reef:
Passengers and crew aboard the Port Douglas-based dive and snorkel vessel Silversonic were excited to see more than five whales, confirmed to be Sei Whales at Agincourt Reef in late February.

The Sei Whales, which remain on the endangered species list, were seen near Silversonic’s “Three Sisters” site at Agincourt Reef. While the boat was stationary, one of the whales emerged in full view spending several minutes around the boat before swimming away. Further in the distance, another four or more whales were seen diving and appeared to be feeding.

The whales were between 15 –18 metres long and due to the inquisitive nature of the whale that approached the boat, several photographs were taken. This enabled the whales to be identified with the assistance of a whale researcher with extensive experience in whale identification. The key to identifying a Sei Whale is through the distinguishing feature of a single ridge extending from the blowholes to the tip of the upper jaw

Taste-Watch-Dance-Play from May 20th. – 30th. 2010

With so many local Port Douglas restaurants sweeping the national and international restaurant awards, we want to celebrate that special facet of life in the former Douglas shire: FOOD. All the glorious fresh and tropical food and wine on offer here is world class and people travel a long way to taste it. The tagline for Carnivale 2010 (and ongoing) is…A Taste of Paradise!

With many events over the festival days don’t miss the:

Seafood Extravaganza 2010 hosted by Meridien Marinas iconic Marina Mirage. Traditionally the event presents an opportunity for the local fishing fleet to show case catches produced straight from the Coral Sea. Basked in sunshine between the Mountain Ranges and Great Barrier Reef, the boardwalk at Marina Mirage provides an ideal location to host such an event.

Book your accommodation at the Pink Flamingo, mention ’Carnivale’ and receive a complimentary bottle of Australian Sparkling Wine!

New Years Eve in Port Douglas is a fun and enjoyable event! Just remember to pre book a table in your favourite restaurant. All venues near the park with views of the Fireworks are popular and will book out on the evening. Best recommended views are from Clements French Restaurants, Bistro 3, Courthouse Hotel, 2 Fish, Harrissons and Salsa Bar as well as Zeus. The restaurants offer a special set menue for the event. Fireworks are at 9pm and Midnight. The fireworks will be set off from Anzac Park opposite The Court House Hotel in Wharf Street thanks to the Douglas business community backing the organisers with sufficient sponsorship funds to be able to present the two displays.

Enjoy and party safe!

The Pink Flamingo Resort will host a small party for their inhouse guests with a cold buffet, outdoor movie and midnight countdown.
